Novell Adds Microsoft's Open XML to OpenOffice

The release candidate of Novell's modified version of OpenOffice.org 2.02 is now available for Windows for free download by registered Novell users.

The Novell® Edition of OpenOffice.org contains enhancements that are not available in the standard edition. These include:

* Enhanced Support for Microsoft Office File Formats: OpenOffice.org supports import and export of Microsoft Office file formats, even taking advantage of compatible fonts to match document length. Transparent document sharing makes OpenOffice.org the best choice if you are deploying it in a mixed Linux/Windows environment.
* E-Mail as Microsoft Office Document: The standard edition of OpenOffice.org supports e-mailing of files as PDF files from within the OpenOffice.org application. With the Novell Edition of OpenOffice.org, you can also e-mail any document as a Microsoft Office file. For example, you can e-mail a Writer file as a Microsoft Word file, so the file is automatically converted and attached to an e-mail in your default e-mail application.
* Excel VBA Macro Interoperability: The Novell Edition of OpenOffice.org eases the migration of many macros from Microsoft Excel. Although not all macros can be successfully migrated, this interoperability offers more than the standard edition, which does not support migration of macros.
* Enhanced Fonts: For the Novell Edition of OpenOffice.org, Novell licensed fonts from AGFA that use the same or similar names as the fonts available in Microsoft Office. The fonts also look similar to those used by Microsoft and have identical metrics. This allows OpenOffice.org to match fonts when opening documents originally composed in Microsoft Office, and very closely match pagination and page formatting.
* ODMA Integration: The Novell Edition of OpenOffice.org for Windows includes initial release of ODMA integration such as GroupWise.

il me semble que OOo est LGPL

Quelqu'un peut expliquer les relations entre cette news et : Le XML du prochain Office de Microsoft non GPL compatible

le convertisseur peut être intégré aux prochains OOo je pense

ça ne peut être qu'un avantage pour OOo qui pourra lire/enregistrer tous le formats (c'est déjà le cas avec les .doc par reverse engineering laborieux), non ?

Novell is also working with Microsoft and others on a project to create bi-directional open-source translators for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations between OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office. The word processing translator is coming first, and currently is expected to be available by the end of January 2007.

The Open XML/ODF Translator project is hosted on SourceForge, and is licensed under the BSD open source license. The first component, the ODF Add-in for Microsoft Word 2007, which allows users to open and save ODF documents in Word, is now available as a 0.3-M1 beta.

These translators will then be made available as plug-ins to Novell's OpenOffice.org product. Novell will release the code to integrate the Open XML format into its product as open source, and will submit it for inclusion in the OpenOffice.org project. Thus, all OpenOffice.org end users will eventually be able to share files between Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org, as a result of the documents maintaining more consistent formats, formulas, and style templates across the two office suites.

- quel sera le statut et la licence de cette version d'OpenOffice propre à Novell ?
- est-ce que cela sera intégré à OpenOffice ou s'agira-t-il d'un fork de Novell ?

1°) novell doit respecter la licence d'OOo et 2° l'a proposé à l'équipe de OOo pour que ce soit intégré (cf mon post du dessus)
