A la demande de la RIAA, Creative lors de la dernière mise à jour du firmware de ses baladeurs "Zen" à supprimé la fonction d'enregistrement des radios FM. (La mise à jour du firmware apporte aussi de nouvelles fonctions).

Oh noes! Creative looks like it's the latest manufacturer to fall prey to the RIAA's war on FM recording. Yeah, we thought this all blew ***spam*** back in the "Home taping is killing music!" days, but slowly we've been seeing modern recording functionality be disabled, with satellite radio devices being some of the first casualties. Now Creative has released a firmware "update" for its Zen MicroPhoto and Zen Vision:M players, which adds Audible support and other minor fixes to the former, video zooming and language support to the latter, but removes FM recording functionality from both players. No telling where this kind of consumer trampling stops, but for now it looks like another win for the RIAA types.

Peuvent-ils vraiment interdire d'enregistrer des programmes FM diffusés à des milliers de gens simultanément ? On croit retomber dans la vielle histoire des années 80 à propos des magnétoscopes... faudra-t-il aussi bientôt s'effacer le cerveau après chaque écoute de chanson ?

Such are the times: Zen music players stop recording FM radio and immediately the tech community suspects foul play.

Zen MicroPhoto and Zen Vision players stopped recording FM radio shows following a recent firmware update, according to complaints posted on the Web site of Creative Labs, which manufacturers the players.

Zen owners and technology pundits began rounding up the usual suspects.

"No telling where this kind of consumer trampling stops, but for now it looks like another win for the (Recording Industry Association of America)," Engadget's Paul Miller wrote.

It's true, the RIAA, the trade organization representing the music industry, has spoken out against devices to record radio shows. But on Wednesday, an RIAA spokesman denied that the organization had anything to do with Zen's recording problems.

That doesn't mean, however, that individual record companies couldn't have pressured Creative to do away with the recording function.

The matter could be easily put to rest if Creative Labs just accounted for the missing function. But company representatives have yet to comment on the issue and did not respond to repeated interview requests from CNET News.com.
