AMD will soon deliver open graphics drivers, said Henri Richard just a few minutes ago, and the audience at the opening keynote of the Red Hat Summit broke into applause and cheers. Richard, AMD's executive vice president of sales and marketing, promised: "I'm here to commit to you that it's going to get done." He also promised that AMD is "going to be very proactive in changing way we interface with the Linux community".

Puma devrait voir le jour courant 2008, en attendant Fusion qui ambitionnera de réunir processeur et carte graphique...

entre la libéralisation des solutions INTEL (en tout cas de la partie graphique. Qu'en est il du wifi au fait ?) et celle probable d'AMD, et compte tenu du fait que la moitié des PC vendus prochainement sera des portables, ça va faire un maximum de PC tournant avec des drivers libres avec de bonnes performances!

Cela permettra t-il de mettre la pression sur les BIOS ensuite ?

The last time we had looked at the performance of Intel's integrated graphics under Linux with their open-source driver was back in February when testing the GMA 3000 IGP using an Intel DQ965GFEKR motherboard. However, with display drivers constantly improving, we recently carried out some additional Intel Q965 graphics tests along with comparing these numbers to discrete graphics solutions from AMD/ATI and NVIDIA.

The graphics cards used for comparison included an ATI Radeon X800XL 256MB with the open-source X.Org driver and NVIDIA's GeForce 8500GT 256MB using the NVIDIA 100.14.03 binary driver

The Intel graphics driver and the Q965 IGP isn't (yet) capable of handling Doom 3 or our other more intensive graphical benchmarks, and thus for this comparison we had used Enemy Territory, Unreal Tournament 2004, and SPECViewPerf 9.0.3. Without further ado, on ***spam*** pages are our results from the most recent open-source graphics benchmarking under Linux.

The Open-Source ATI R500 Driver

Last week the first open-source ATI R500 driver had entered the world. This new driver (named the xf86-video-avivo) is very early into development, but a small set of developers have been working on reverse engineering this GPU class for the past couple of months. This driver does not yet contain any 3D functionality or support for features that most end-users expect. At this point, the driver just contains very basic initialization and set video mode support for a portion of the Radeon X1000 family. Even with this very basic R500 driver, we couldn't help but to explore the Avivo driver for the past few days.

LWN.net writes: "A quick report from the kernel summit: AMD's representative at the summit has announced that the company has made a decision to enable the development of open source drivers for all of its (ATI) graphics processors from the R500 going forward. There will be specifications available and a skeleton driver as well; a free 2D driver is anticipated by the end of the year. The rest will have to be written; freeing of the existing binary-only driver is not in the cards, and 'that is better for everybody'. Things are looking good on this front.
