Even if the license for the code is not open source, it is an important step. Sun had done something similar with Java in the past and ***spam*** time they moved towards opening more and more of it. Am still hope that one day Microsoft will open pieces of this under more liberal licenses that would allow those pieces to be used for any purposes, including Mono.

Groklaw reports that a company called IP Innovation, LLC, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Novell and Red Hat. Groklaw goes into black helicopter mode, trying to find a tie between this IP Innovation thing and Microsoft - and it finds it too. A few ex-Microsoft employees now work at IP Innovation. Do with it as you please.

Un grand service rendu à Microsoft

Cette fois, Microsoft et Novell ont conclu un accord de coopération technique. Microsoft a en effet tout à y gagner puisqu'il laisse un partenaire améliorer la portabilité de son client riche. La version officielle de Silverlight n'est en effet disponible que pour Internet Explorer et Firefox sous Windows, Safari et Firefox sur Mac OS.

Microsoft a fourni à Novell la spécification technique complète de Silverlight (pour éviter un long travail de reverse engineering, ou décompilation) et une suite de tests qui permettront à l'équipe de Moonlight de garantir la compatibilité de leur implémentation. Ils disposeront également des versions binaires des codecs de Microsoft pour pouvoir lire des flux multimédias. Et même si ce sont les équipes de Novell qui développeront seules Moonlight, Microsoft leur promet le support de ses propres équipes techniques en cas de besoin. De son côté, Novell s'est engagé à redistribuer Moonlight au-delà d'OpenSuSE : des packages RPM et DEB seront également disponibles.

Ubuntu was great in its early days, because it took upstream to the people, bringing the 6-month GNOME release cycle into users' hands quickly and predictably. But ***spam*** the past year or two Ubuntu has become less and less ***spam***. Part of it, I feel, is that Ubuntu strays too far from free software. Ubuntu is willing to accept and accomodate proprietary software in the distribution. In a related fashion, resources that go into Ubuntu/Canonical do not, in a large part, go to further the development of free software, because most development that Canonical pays for goes into the downstream product "Ubuntu" and not into the larger free software world of the kernel, glibc, GTK+, GNOME, etc.
